My kids and I headed over to the Heard to visit the Native Texas Butterfly House to see what all the fuss was about. I had received an email announcing that it was open and ready for visitors, but I didn’t really know what it was. I had passed by it a few times before and after my hikes over there, but I had not ever stopped in to check it out. I will not make that mistake again.
What a magical place. It is a small little butterfly house in the middle of a beautiful butterfly garden near the front of the Heard. You walk in, and you are transported to a magical place. My kids and I were amazed at how fun it was to be so close to so many different butterflies. Sure…we see them in our yard all the time, but when there are so many flying all around you, landing on your shirt, and the flowers right there within your reach, it is something else…
I was amazed. And…of course I had my camera with my macro lens attached for this particular visit, so I was in Heaven. So were my kids. Each time I turned around, I saw Morgan’s hand reaching out to pet another butterfly. The sign that said “Please Don’t Touch the Butterflies” did not sit well with her.
But be aware…there are also lots of interesting spiders in various places as well. We were so distracted by the butterflies, that we did not notice them at first. But believe me…once my kids discovered all the spiders, some of the magic from the butterflies disappeared! And it was time to move on…
However, whether or not you are a fan of spiders, the Native Texas Butterfly Garden & House at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is a place that you really should add to your summer Bucket List! Have fun, and let me know what you think. Until next time…
